I read this earlier and enjoyed it and went about my day. Then I was still thinking about it a couple of hours later, so I thought I’d come back and comment.
Dreadful stuff escalates because right-minded people don’t call it when they see it. It’s hard to call stuff when you see it because, sometimes, you get punched in the face and everyone calls you daft because one person can’t make much difference in the grand scheme of things. The inmate who said ‘I’m not building this incinerator’ would’ve had the shit kicked out of her and died. Someone else would do what she refused to do. But, if you don’t call the dreadful stuff, it becomes naturalised for everyone involved and calling it becomes impossible. So it’s good to call shit when you see it, I suppose.
On another note, it’s funny how much your writing style has changed since you wrote this.
