FAITH ALIVE

Red-Pepper
Ordinarily, I’d wait until I had a few of these in the bag, but this one really speaks for itself… It’s the front page of today’s Ugandan tabloid Red Pepper. I’ve been looking around the site and, let’s just say that at Red Pepper, they don’t hold back in their reporting.

The originally story is reported somewhat less colourfully here by the Daily Monitor.

October 8th, 2009.

Last Summer I spent 6 weeks working in a remote hospital in southwestern Uganda. The links are to pictures I took of newspaper articles – all on a single day. They’re a little more subdued than the one above but keep in mind that these are from fancy newspapers for the educated middle class.

Well, the anti-gay stuff would have been fairly widespread in Ireland 20 years ago (the DUP still hold pretty much that line, don’t they?)

But this stuff about security guards armed with wasps… Now that’s worrying!

It’s like someone from Uganda was an intern for The Sun or the Daily Mirror and then went home and siad Right heres how we’re doing it from now on…

@ stevethomas – influence of British tabloids indeed very much in evidence, although they don’t quite have it down.

In tabloid-land, female rape (and even murder) can be exploited for lurid detail. Male rape can’t.

Male rape can, however, be used as the basis for comedy, but only if it’s hypothetical and takes place in prison.
