God hates…
I’ve been reading the text of this speech by Nate Phelps, son of controversial Westboro Baptist Church pastor Fred Phelps. Clearly, the guy got dealt a pretty bum hand family-wise. And you’d have to admire the way he has overcome that and built a normal life for himself. But isn’t it rather bizarre that his speaking out is regarded as some sort of propaganda coup for opponents of the Westboro Church? I mean, for Christ’s sake, Phelps Sr. has picketed the funerals of 911 victims and soldiers killed in Iraq. He thinks Ronald Reagan, Bill O’Reilly and Coretta Scott King will all burn in hell as “fag enablers.” He is responsible for the God Hates Ireland website. (Watch the video – they do a sort of Riverdance on the Irish flag!) Do his critics really need any more ammunition? Are they that insecure? Do they really need that re-enforcement? The man is a troll. The most articulate response to him is none at all.

This kind of illustrates your point. The Fox News wan here takes an indignant “just what is your problem”-type tone and ends up almost looking as ridiculous as the westboro lady.
It’s hard to just ignore them when they’re picketing funerals of dead soldiers. I think the best response is to find some anti-hate crime law under which to prosecute them, and just lock ’em up.

Well, this is the point. The Fox News lady has already determined – correctly – that the Westboro woman is crazy, so why the fuck does she invite her on the show? (“After the break, I’ll be shouting at the horse that paralysed Christopher Reeve…”)
