Doe anyone else think Avatar is the most overrated pile of crap they’ve ever seen? Yes the special effects are amazing but the plot was three hours of complete crap/
The Smurfs set to ‘Dances with Wolves’ in space is certainly overrated.
Only saw the trailer and yet could probably discuss the movie with anyone who has seen it.
Probably will win all the Oscars its nominated for (mostly effects), except director which goes to Kathryn Bigelow cause she’s a woman who made a fine manly movie (The Hurt Locker).
@ Ger – haven’t seen the film myself. I understand that was pretty much the critical consensus though, yeah.
@ Colin – saw Hurt Locker when it came out first and thought it was absolutely brilliant. If I could have changed one thing though it would have been the very last scene.
THey should have ended it with him looking baffled in the cereal aisle. That would have been cool. Instead they spelled it out to us like we were three years old.
Yep, the “Tell me why you think you do this, you crazy mixed up guy.” scene was an insult to everyone’s intelligence,. Makes me wonder if she wasn’t coerced into including it because everything else in the film treated us like adults.
I think hurt locker is one of the greatest war movies ever made. Great filmmaking, great script and a very intricate character study that went beyond special effects. Avatar is spectacular visually… but completely lame and stupid when it comes to character and story.
Who is going to win the Oscar? Probably Avatar, Hollywood is not going disagree with two billion people.
@ Phil – Could be. As you said, it’s an intelligent film that, in the very last scene, suddenly changes its mind and decides the audience are morons.
@ Brian – the film has taken $2b at the box office, but that equates to two billion people. That would be a hell of a lot of pairs of 3D glasses if it did!
Totally disagree with what people are saying the story is lacking…I believe that once you watch it you will totally forget all about that when you are absorbed into the character’s lives.
It’s an AMAZING film and i don’t care what anyone else says. There aren’t even words for how beautiful and amazing and just, STELLAR it is.
Just saw Hurt Locker. Brilliant movie, pulls no punches. Definitely the best of the year but no doubt liberal Hollywood establishment will go for the cartoon cowboys and Indians thing. (As far as sci-fi goes, I actually thought Moon was a much better film than Avatar.)
@Colin Have now seen Avatar. And Im with you, February 8th version of myself. You were right.
Few things you do get to learn from seeing the movie. (And I complain cause this film has made over 2 billion, mainly due to 3D and it’s hyped simple tale with expensive theme park theatrics.)
1) James Cameron is a very effective director who is willing to do whatever it takes, no matter how cheap, to sell his cliche-ridden tale. There is some entertainment here but I groaned many many times. I laughed at nearly everything Colonel One-Dimensional does or says.
2)This film really does feel like one moment you are in a set sci-fi reality and the next you’re in a cartoon, multi-coloured world. Like when Mary Poppins took the kids into the chalk paving picture.
3)The cat like Navi have a 2nd brain stem thats coated in hair that they use to “bond” with everything on the planet. And everything on the planet also has a convenient 2nd brain stem outside their bodies, from horses, giant reptilian birds and plants, yeah plants.
4)This film has the “Oh if they had done that earlier, things would have been alright and not so many would have died” moment happen several times. Can’t discuss without spoiling story. It’s annoying how obvious some are due to the circumstances of setup.
5)Everywhere you step, touch or look in Pandora, something lights up, literally. Every scene in the jungle, someone takes a step and the crap under their feet lights up. It’s like MJ’s Billie Jean video multiplied by a billion. Trippy. There will no doubt be an Pandora-centric edited version for LSD/Marajuana users.
6)Avatar is better than those Star Wars prequels. Depending how much you liked/hated them will affect the value of “better”.
