She’ll probably deny it now, but I had this song on in the car once and, midway through, my sister turned to me and said “Man, they really don’t seem to like that Sam Quentin guy, do they?” Worth baring in mind here that the prisoners Cash entertained weren’t necessarily nice guys. Here one of them talks about why he’s in prison.

Yeah they were the glory days for Cash. He had proper rapists and murderers in the audience.
Later on in the 80’s when his prison audiences were tax evaders and mild traffic offences he knew he’d hit rock bottom.
