Spectacular chat show bust-up between Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal from 1971. Cavett’s account of the fracas, published in the New York Times in the wake of Mailer’s death in 2007, is here. If you haven’t time for either, let me synopsise in five words: Norman Mailer was a dick.

Agreed Gregor. Re: fingerbowl. I’ve always assumed he meant that, while his intellect would require two extra chairs, the intellects of his adversaries were so tiny they could be accomodated in fingerbowls.
Bizarre how this pretty obvious explanation still doesn’t seemt to have occurred to Cavett even yet.

To my shame, I not only saw but also laughed out loud for the duration of Step Brothers.
Not sure about the John C. Reilly thing – although I think his Jewfro is slightly Seth Rogan.

to your shame? that film is brilliant and a future sleeper hit, mark my words. Their first exchange at the dinner table – comedy gold. “last time I heard that joke I laughed so hard that fell off my dinosaur”
Anyway, it’s when his head is all vexed and wrinkled up at the beginning.
